In Kotzebue, the Ravens stay all winter
The Ravens can survive.
But the other birds
are gone by October.
The sky is empty
of flurry and activity
that only feathered wings can fill.

The month of May
and the Seagulls come,
Bringing with them
A Proclamation of Spring.
Their voices
like laughter
fill the air with song.

The Seagulls,
They fill the air with sound and
the patterns of their flight.
Joy returns to Kotzebue.
Though it is cold, I leave
the door open to hear
the song of the gull.

Last night the ducks came,
The geese will be next
And then one by one,
others will return.
Their feathers falling to
the earth while laughing children
pick them up.

I will sing a song on the shoreline
Raising my arms high, holding
a feathered fan, dancing,
Glad to be alive.
Yes! I sing a song that decrees,
I have survived like the Ravens.
I have made it through another Winter.
